Museum of Northwest Colorado | Craig, CO

The Museum of Northwest Colorado is housed in the former National Guard Armory in downtown Craig, Colorado. The building was built in 1921 and was used as an Armory until the 1970s when it became a community center. It was renovated in 1991 and became the local history museum.

The Museum Cowboy and Gunflighter collection is the culmination of a fifty year effort of Bill Mackin to collect and preserve fine, old cowboy gear. The guns, gun leather, chaps, spurs, saddles, and other accoutrements now represent one of the world's most outstanding collections of western Americana.

The collection includes 19th century saddles, spurs made by the most renowned spur makers in the west, fine leather work and tools used by cowboys on the open range.

An oil painting depicting Craig in 1895 is considered to be the largest stretched canvas oil painting on the western slope of Colorado. The painting measures approximately 11 by 16 feet and was painted by a local artist.

The museum also features exhibits on rocks and fossils, coal mining, railroading, a local hardware store, and an old classroom that includes 100 years of class photos from Craig/Moffat County High School.

The Museum of Western Colorado is located at 590 Yampa Avenue in Craig, Colorado. Craig is approximately 90 miles north of I-70 and 100 miles south of I-80. It is 200 miles west of Denver and 40 miles west of Steamboat Springs. Museum hours are: Monday thru Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Admission is free.
