Four Mile Historic Park | Denver, CO

Four Mile Historic Park is a 12-acre park, home to the Denver area's oldest standing structure, Four Mile House.  It was built in 1859 to serve as a stage stop, wayside inn, and tavern for travelers on the Cherokee Trail headed to newly founded Denver City.  Levi and Millie Booth, owners from 1864 until the 1940s, grew the small wayside inn to a 600-acre working ranch/farm.

The original 1859 log structure (covered in clapboard siding) was expanded in 1883 with a large brick addition. Visitors to the site can trace the building's history from its days as a stage stop to its evolution to a family home well appointed with Victorian furnishings. The House is restored to its 1860s and 1880s condition and is interpreted with authentic artifacts from the Booth family who lived there until the 1940s. You can also come and enjoy exploring the other re-created buildings in the Park showing life on the farm in those early days - explore a miners and trappers cabin, tipi, gold panning, blacksmith shop, and visit the park's animal residents.

On a year-round basis the park is alive with school field trips, where young pioneers spend their days panning for gold, cooking over an open fire, and engaging in activities that their counterparts of 150 years ago enjoyed. Educational programs continue throughout the summer. There are also summer and winter camp programs that give campers a hands-on taste of early Colorado.

Senior field trips extend a version of early Colorado to the community's retirees. The popular Chuck Wagon Lunch program offers campfire victuals, music, tours and stories to entertain and educate.

Operated by nonprofit, Four Mile Historic Park, Inc., the park is an urban oasis that features pioneer exhibits, special events for all ages, and guided tours that transport visitors to Colorado's frontier past. Visitors may wish to go to the Park for special events like the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Party, the Pumpkin Harvest Festival and a Colorado Christmas celebration.

FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL
Four Mile House is four miles from Denver - the last of the 'mile' houses along the Cherokee Trail.

The 1859 Four Mile House is the oldest standing structure in the Denver front range area.

Why waste gas when you can bike to Four Mile House, which is located along the Cherry Creek Bike Path just four miles from downtown?

Cherry Creek, where gold was first discovered, is named for the chokecherry bushes and trees that grew along the creek - Four Mile Park is home to some large chokecherry trees.

The Cherokee Trail runs along the front range - right by Four Mile House. It was named for some early Cherokee Native Americans who first found gold along the route

Summer 2009 Day Camps...Experience Colorado's Pioneer Life and the Charm of the Old West!

Four Mile Historic Park will be hosting four history camps during the 2009 Summer (June - August); Adventure Camp, Homesteading Camp, How the West was Fun!, and Butcher, Baker, Candle-stick Maker Camp.

· Adventure Camp will introduce Native American life in Colorado (Cheyenne, Arapahoe & Ute), authentic pioneer cooking and foods, and panning for gold like a '59er. Campers will also become a Mountain Man for a day, participate in a rendezvous, and ride in a horse-drawn wagon just like the settlers who crossed the plains in the mid-1800s!

· Homesteading Camp teaches campers about the unique situations associated with early homesteading in Colorado as they build a new community at Four Mile Historic Park. Campers will also enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, participating in farm life activities, visiting a blacksmith, making a historic quilt, attending one-room school, and cooking in a wood-burning stove from the 1860s.

· How the West was Fun! provides campers with hands-on experiences as they learn about several different groups of immigrants and their unique experiences in the Westward Expansion. The customs, traditions, and crafts of the African American, Hispanic, Jewish, and Chinese pioneers will come to life for these children.

· Butcher, Baker, Candle-stick Maker Camp explores common occupations of the West from the 1860s-1900s.
