Former President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized on Sunday, one day after his wife, Barbara Bush's funeral.

An official statement from the office of the 93-year-old retired politician was released on Monday and revealed that Bush had been admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital "after contracting an infection that spread to his blood."

The statement went on to say that Bush is "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering."

This is the latest in a string of health problems for the former president, including a battle with pneumonia in January 2017, and again three months later. He has also been suffering from vascular parkinsonism, which has required him to use a wheelchair for mobility since 2012.

The infection comes just a day after the 41st president -- who served as commander-in-chief for one term, from 1989 to 1993 -- laid to rest his wife of 73 years, Barbara, at a funeral ceremony held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston.

The former first lady and mother of former president George W. Bush died on April 17, following the announcement that she had decided to forego further medical treatments for her failing health and spend her remaining days with family

The funeral was attended by all living former presidents, including their son George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as former first ladies Laura Bush, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama.

First Lady Melania Trump also came out to pay respects on behalf of herself and President Donald Trump, who chose not to attend to "avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service."

ET will continue to cover this story as it develops.
