Colorado-raised Grand Champion Steer auctions for record price

The Grand Champion Steer from LaSalle broke the previous record auction by $40,000.

DENVER — The 2023 Auction of Junior Livestock Champions at the National Western Stock Show was one for the record books.

The auction's sales set a new record of $585,000 across the top eight champion animals. The previous record from 2020 was $531,000.

Stan The Man, the 2023 Grand Champion Steer shown by LaSalle resident Justin Pfannebecker, sold for a record $200,000, to Ames Construction Company.

The previous steer record was set in 2022 when the Grand Champion Steer sold for $160,000.

The Colorado-raised Reserve Grand Champion Hog also sold for a record price, $75,000, topping the former record of $50,000 set in 2022.

The money from the auction will support the junior exhibitors that raised the animals as they plan for their agricultural future and college educations. In addition, a portion of the proceeds supports the National Western Scholarship Trust.

The top eight junior market animals were auctioned live on 9NEWS.
