Safety Fix: Install a permanent baby gate

FIX THIS - Once they can crawl and walk, keeping up with babies becomes a whole new game.  Any baby gate can help act as a deterrent to keep them off the stairs, or away from the dog food in the kitchen but if you want a stronger solution, that won't topple over, you'll want to install a permanent gate.

FIX THIS - Once they can crawl and walk, keeping up with babies becomes a whole new game. Any baby gate can help act as a deterrent to keep them off the stairs, or away from the dog food in the kitchen - but if you want a stronger solution that won't topple over you'll want to install a permanent gate.

Permanent gates are also fantastic for families with pets. They can help keep your dogs out of certain rooms, or from getting into food or garbage in the kitchen.

What you need:

  • A permanent gate kit from a big box store, or you can order them online.
  • Stud finder
  • Extra large dry wall anchors
  • Level
  • Power drill

Steps:

  1. Make sure to read the directions on your purchased gate closely.
  2. The gate should come with a template. One side is for the latch, the other for the hinge.
  3. When anchoring the gate make sure to use extra sturdy dry wall anchors if you're not near a stud.
  4. Once you attach one side, check to make sure the gate is level before continuing.
  5. While the finished product will be sturdier than the plastic gates that use pressure, experts say don't let your kids hang on them.
