Ready for some weekend fun? Celebrate the season in Colorado's mountains this weekend at one of several annual ice events or take a plunge at Lake Pueblo. If you're looking to stay inside, there are multiple unique and memorable musical experiences on the stage through Sunday. For sports fans, this weekend is a big one for a Colorado collegiate rivalry. So between watching Olympic events on 9NEWS, get out and about and check out one of these neat events across Colorado:
Rails in the Rockies - Estes Park
Dedicated railroaders from Colorado and Wyoming will be showing their craftsmanship at the Estes Park Event Center on Saturday and Sunday at the 21st annual Rails in the Rockies show. Explore model railroad layouts from the steam age to the present time at this annual event organized by the Estes Valley Model Railroaders. There will be plenty of activities for kids too. Renaissance in Ice - Cripple Creek
The Cripple Creek Ice Festival is truly a Colorado tradition and this year's theme is "Renaissance on Ice." Watch ice sculptors carve ice into beautiful works of art. There are great activities for kids including an ice slide and ice maze. The event features free parking at the Heritage Center northeast of town on Highway 67 and shuttle service is free on Saturday and Sunday. The Cripple Creek Ice Festival runs through Sunday.
Romeo and Juliet - Denver
The Colorado Ballet's production of Romeo and Juliet begins Friday at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The classic Shakespearean love story comes to life in this stunning ballet with choreography from Derek Deane. Artistic Director Gil Boggs says “Derek Deane’s choreography is magnificent and the sets and costumes are eye candy. It features some of the greatest music ever written for this ballet and our orchestra is playing it live – this performance is just going to transform your evening.” Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased at ColoradoBallet.org or by phone at 303-837-8888 ext. 2. Free Aurora Symphony Concert - Brighton
The Aurora Symphony Orchestra is taking its show on the road to Brighton for a free concert on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. at The Armory Performing Arts Center. The program “It’s A Fiesta” celebrates the vibrant sounds of Latin American music. Discover the exciting rhythms of the many different cultures of Mexico, including Aztec, Roman Catholic, as well as mariachi music! Guest percussionist Kevin Keith joins the ASO for this spectacular event. The program includes Partichela’s Jarabe Tapatío, Luis Diego Herra’s Concerto for Marimba and H. The Colorado Blizzard – of the Major Arena Soccer League – are back in action at the Denver Coliseum for the final home match of the season. The Blizzard currently have a 7-1 record and are set to play Western Conference leaders Ontario Fury II (6-4). The match begins Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Denver Coliseum at I-70 and Brighton Blvd. Tickets start at just $13 and can be purchased at AXS.com.
Wolford Ice Fishing Tournament - Kremmling
Head to Kremmling on Saturday for the 21st Annual Wolford Mountain Reservoir Ice Fishing Contest. The contest features thousands of dollars in cash prizes including $10,000 for winning the tagged-fish competition and cash prizes for the top 10 largest fish! There will be hourly prizes for adults and youth as well. The ice fishing contest takes place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Registration is $35 for those 15 and older. STOMP - Denver
The smash hit music experience known as STOMP is at the Buell Theatre in Denver through Sunday. The eight-member troupe in STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – wooden poles, trash cans, matchboxes, brooms, hubcaps, Zippo lighters and more – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. Pueblo Polar Plunge - Pueblo
Take the plunge for a great cause! The "Pueblo Polar Plunge presented by Westerra Credit Union" on Saturday is raising money to support Special Olympics and the 22,000 Colorado athletes with intellectual disabilities. Check in at Lake Pueblo begins at 9 a.m. with the plunge set for 11 a.m. You can register online through Friday at 8 p.m. but you'll still be able to register at the event. If you aren't able to take the plunge, you can still make a difference by donating online.
DU vs. Colorado College Hockey - Colorado Springs & Denver
One of the biggest sports rivalries in Colorado will be on display this weekend when the University of Denver and Colorado College face off in ice hockey. Since 1993, the DU Pioneers and CC Tigers have battled for the Gold Pan, with each team winning the trophy twelve times. Although DU has won the Gold Pan for three consecutive years, the Pios will be without forward Troy Terry who is competing with the U.S. Olympic team in Pyeongchang. The teams will take to the ice Friday night at 8 p.m. in Colorado Springs at the Broadmoor World Arena (tickets at AXS.com) and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Denver at Magness Arena. Denver leads the all-time series with Colorado College, 175-116-19.
