Denver’s constantly changing downtown restaurant scene is about to undergo another upheaval, as Wazee Supper Club will close its doors in late January after 43 years and be replaced by a contemporary French restaurant.

A staple of Lower Downtown since 1974, the restaurant was opened by Angelo and Jim Karagas, who also launched the still-operating My Brothers Bar. Roadhouse Hospitality Group — operators of 15 other restaurants throughout the Front Range and the mountain areas — bought it in 2015, planning to revamp the Italian-themed menu.

However, that effort came shortly after the opening of Denver Union Station and its variety of restaurants and bars, and the Wazee makeover got lost a bit in that excitement, said Dan Shipp, Roadhouse co-owner.

He and restaurant group executives looked at turning the space into one of their burger-and-beer-themed Roadhouse concepts but then decided the space called for more of a destination restaurant. They instead found a buyer that could bring a unique concept and liven up the building.
