The intuitive thing is to think that staying open on Thanksgiving helps retailers, since it adds a day of shopping to the holiday season. But retailers big and small are increasingly approaching the decision differently as they assess how much value staying open on Thanksgiving provides. It was only about a half-decade ago that the idea of opening on Thanksgiving began to take hold. Now, as the New York Times framed the issue recently, retailers need to figure out whether shoppers are doing extra buying on Thanksgiving or if the activity on that Thursday is simply siphoned off from the day that follows: Black Friday.
