Make your poinsettias pop this holiday season

9NEWS home and garden expert Rob Proctor offers tips on how to make your poinsettias pop this holiday season.

Nothing looks sadder than a foil-wrapped poinsettia sitting on a tray table next to the TV.

Poinsettias need company to look their best and to keep them healthy. Group them with other plants to create a more humid space.

Start with a low, wide container. Wicker baskets are always useful. Line the container with plastic.

With the poinsettia as the centerpiece, combine it with other seasonal flowers and foliage plants. Don't take them out of their pots--you're not actually planting them. Use plastic containers to prop up the ones in smaller pots so they don't get lost.

Consider adding potted flowering plants such as cyclamen and Christmas cactus. Foliage plants such as succulents, dracaenas, ivy, Norfolk Island pine, rosemary and pothos contribute contrasting textures and shapes. Use moss to disguise any pots that are still visible. Tie on a colorful bow if you like.

All these plants will benefit from being together. Bright light and attention to watering will keep them in good shape.
