Fort Collins and metro Denver both rank in the top 25 in the Milken Institute’s latest report on the nation’s “best performing cities.”

The annual report aims to identify “where America’s jobs are created and sustained.”

Fort Collins ranks No. 5 — up from No. 8 last year — and the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metro area lands at No. 23, down from No. 13 a year ago.

Provo-Orem Utah takes the top spot this year, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina; Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas; San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco, California; and Fort Collins.

Milken — an economic think tank based in Santa Monica, Calif. — says its best-performing cities index “was designed to measure objectively which U.S. metropolitan areas are promoting economic vitality based on job creation and retention, the quality of new jobs, and other criteria. The index shows where employment is stable and expanding, wages and salaries are increasing, and economies and businesses are thriving.”
