America's best jobs? Here's how U.S. News ranks them

Additionally, U.S. News reported on the cities where employees can expect to earn the highest salaries.

A new year can bring new opportunities for executives who are considering a career change. If you're in that group, perhaps a job as a software developer should be put near the top of your list of potential jobs.

That's because software development is the best job in the country for 2018, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual ranking of best jobs, a list that was released today. Driven by a surge in demand for employees with technological expertise, software development was able to push jobs in the health care field out of the No. 1 spot.

This year's list marks the first time since 2015 that a health care job wasn't ranked at the top of the list.

Health care did, however, continue to dominate the rest of the 2018 ranking, with 47 of the top 100 jobs coming out of the field. In fact, the rest of the top five jobs on U.S. News' list came from the health care industry.
