Another HQ2? Apple plans a new corporate campus in a U.S. city

The news comes on the heels of Amazon.com Inc.'s well-publicized open call for a city search for a second headquarters campus as large as its current one in Seattle, which triggered a stampede of bids from metro Denver and other cities.

Apple Inc. is gearing up to build another corporate campus in a yet-to-be-announced American city and increase its workforce across the U.S. by 20,000 new employees over the next five years, the iPhone maker said today.

"The company plans to establish an Apple campus in a new location, which will initially house technical support for customers. The location of this new facility will be announced later in the year," says a company announcement today.

The news comes on the heels of Amazon.com Inc.'s well-publicized open call for a city search for a second headquarters campus as large as its current one in Seattle, which triggered a stampede of bids from metro Denver and other cities.

Unlike Amazon, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) did not announce an open competition for a campus site or indicate how large the facility will be. The company's new $5 billion headquarters in Cupertino, California, called Apple Park, which opened last year, is 2.8 million square feet and is designed to eventually house 12,000 employees.
