Colorado-based Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health will merge to form one of the largest faith-based health systems in America — a decision that was reached after 14 months of negotiations, the companies announced today.

CHI, based in Arapahoe County, and San Francisco-based Dignity will establish corporate headquarters in Chicago under a new name that will be chosen in the second half of 2018.

The deal is expected to close sometime late next year, pending federal, state and church approvals.

CHI is a co-owner of Centura Health, the largest health system in Colorado, and operates 100 hospitals overall in 17 states, generating revenue of $15.5 billion in fiscal year 2017.
