The CenturyLink Inc. acquisition of Level 3 Communications Inc. of Broomfield is being contested in California.

CenturyLink of Louisiana is offering $34 billion to buy Level 3(Nasdaq: LVLT). But two California consumer advocacy groups want California regulators to further scrutinize the deal.

The groups are asking the California Public Utilities Commission to hold off on any approval until questions are answered.

"The application must demonstrate that there will be no negative impact on competition, enhanced service quality and reliability, further investment in network infrastructure, consumer protections, and no negative impact to California jobs," one group wrote to the California PUC.
