DENVER - Reports that climate change may force Denver-based Chipotle to stop dishing up avocados were hard to stomach for guacamole lovers across the country.

Now the company says those reports are a "non-issue" and the whole thing is overblown.

The idea of the restaurant parting ways with the little green fruit prompted headlines warning of the "guacapocalypse," and sent people running to the nearest Chipotle.

"We don't always get guacamole, so we got guacamole tonight on purpose," Denver customer Julie Pelegrin said.

It all started because Chipotle notified its investors:

"Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients.

In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients, we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients."

Tough to digest for avocado aficionados, but Chipotle soon clarified that the Security and Exchange Commission filing was a routine "risk factor "disclosure, and the company will keep on serving the beloved snack food.

That's despite the drought in California, a major source of the country's crop, and some scientists' predictions that climate change will cause a 40 percent drop in California avocado production over the next 30 years.

The general manager of Benny's Restaurant and Tequila Bar in Denver says chips will never go lonely there.

"Our guacamole is the most popular item we could have on our menu," Marisol Armas said. "You can't really take guacamole out of a Mexican restaurant."

She agrees avocados are one of the most unpredictable ingredients when it comes to pricing and availability.

"There's always going to be ups and downs with avocados because of the climate in different countries," Armas said.

For now, rest easy - you won't be forced into holding the guac anytime soon.
