Colorado takes its voting seriously.

The state is ranked No. 1 in the nation for its political engagement; ranked by its voter turnout over the last six years, voter registration, and residents' contributions to presidential campaigns.

"Colorado is one of the closest races during this year’s presidential election and, as a result, is one of the key swing states. It ranks highly in all the engagement categories we looked at. According to metrics like voter turnout, Colorado is becoming more engaged," according to researchers at SmartAsset, who said in a statement that Colorado had an impressive 70.4 percent voter participation during the last presidential election in 2012.

Massachusetts, Maine and Oregon follow Colorado on the national list of most politically engaged states.
