Denver among cities where the most taxpayers owe Uncle Sam on Tax Day

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL — Have you mailed your tax return to Uncle Sam yet?

Denver is among the top metros where taxpayers owe federal taxes, according to a report by personal financial website Magnify Money.

Across the U.S., 17 percent of taxpayers owe taxes, while 78 percent receive a refund. And tax bills are more likely to be owed by taxpayers that itemize expenses.

The cities are ranked by the highest percentage of taxpayers who owe taxes. The figures are based on five years of data from the Internal Revenue Service for returns filed from Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2016 in the 100 largest U.S. metros.
