The U.S. states that have enjoyed the strongest job growth under the Democratic administration of Barack Obama are North Dakota, Utah and Texas. But all three are likely to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Nov. 8.

North Dakota holds first place in new job-growth rankings from American City Business Journals, based on its 23.9 percent increase in private-sector employment since Obama assumed the presidency nearly eight years ago.

ACBJ compared each state's total private-sector employment in January 2009, when Obama took office, with the corresponding figure for September 2016, the latest month covered by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. All totals have been seasonally adjusted.

North Dakota landed in the No. 1 position on the back of an oil boom that dawned at roughly the same time Obama entered the White House.
