Christine Perich has unexpectedly resigned as president and CEO of New Belgium Brewing Co., Colorado's largest craft brewer, after a year in the post.

Perich tendered her resignation to the board of the Fort Collins-based maker of Fat Tire Amber Ale earlier this week, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports.

"We were surprised," Kim Jordan -- New Belgium's co-founder and executive chair and its previous CEO -- told the newspaper. Jordan and other brewery leaders will handle the chief executive's duties until a new one is found.

The company said Perich wants to "pursue other opportunities."
