An international design contest for solar-powered homes — one that’s also known for incorporating the next hot thing in residential home construction — is setting up camp near Denver International Airport.

It’s the 2017 Solar Decathlon, an international contest by 11 teams of college students on the design and construction of solar-powered houses.

The competition, which aims for homes designed to be “affordable, innovative and highly energy-efficient,” is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

But the contest wants more from the teams than a small house sporting solar power panels on the roof.
