The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. has steamrolled into the marijuana business as Colorado and a growing list of other states legalize the drug for medicinal or recreational use.

So far, Marysville, Ohio-based Scotts (NYSE: SMG) has invested in established businesses affiliated with hydroponics -- growing pot, fruits and vegetables without soil.

In July, Scotts said in a securities filing that it was enlisting Boulder-based AeroGrow International Inc. (OTCQB: AERO) in the indoor-gardening space, including developing large-scale gardening and consumer lighting products.

Now, the lawn and garden giant is aiming to use its core background – chemicals – to expand the growing niche.

The company is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on pesticide products to be used on legal marijuana growing, CEO Jim Hagedorn said Thursday.
