When the 35th annual edition of the Great American Beer Festival opens on Thursday afternoon at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado breweries once again will be front and center of the showcase.

A total of 152 breweries from the state will be pouring beers through Saturday night, including 21 that are displaying their wares for the first time, according to the Brewers Association, the Boulder-based craft-beer trade group that organizes the event.

More established Colorado brewers, meanwhile, will headline everything from the Brewers Studio Pavilion talks to a food/beer pairing section to Meet-the-Brewer Hall.

While a number of local brewers admit that the GABF can be draining — especially now that the week leading into it, dubbed Denver Beer Fest, is a nonstop cavalcade of special tappings, dinners and mini-festivals — the benefits to having the largest beer-tasting event in America in their backyard each year far outweigh any drawbacks.
