DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) have appointed a Brigham and Women’s surgeon as CEO of their new health care company, which will be based in Boston.

Dr. Atul Gawande, who currently works as a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as a professor in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, will move into the CEO role on July 9. The new company, which does not yet have a name, will be headquartered in Boston and will focus on tackling rising health care costs, according to Wednesday's announcement.

“I’m thrilled to be named CEO of this health care initiative," Gawande said in a statement. “I have devoted my public health career to building scalable solutions for better health care delivery that are saving lives, reducing suffering, and eliminating wasteful spending both in the US and across the world. Now I have the backing of these remarkable organizations to pursue this mission with even greater impact for more than a million people, and in doing so incubate better models of care for all. This work will take time but must be done. The system is broken, and better is possible.”

The three corporate giants announced the creation of the company in January, saying that the organization would be free from profit-making incentives and would seek to improve employee satisfaction in health care and reduce health care costs.
