“Things in Bike Lanes” campaign aims to keep city’s bike lanes clear and safe

Delivery trucks, ride share vehicles, personal vehicles, and construction sites are some of the things in the way of the city's bike lanes.

Bicycle Colorado and Bike Denver have teamed up to raise awareness about safety issues in Denver’s bike lanes.

They’ve launched the website "thingsinbikelanesdenver.com" to encourage people to submit photos and information about the misuse of the lanes. It’s an effort to educate the community and keep people safe.

“It’s unsafe for people riding bikes when they have to veer out into traffic and it makes it unsafe for the people in cars or trucks to have to avoid them,” said Executive Director of Bike Denver James Waddel.

The site will be a portal to collect data on where the incidents are happening.

“We thought, let us step in here and create one place for all these photos and incidents to be recorded and then we can go to public works,” Waddel said. “They’re encouraging this and they want to get the data so they can make some better-informed decisions on their policies and infrastructure and if necessary enforcement.”

According to Waddel, the campaign has already received more than 70 submissions since its launch last week. He hopes to have a fair amount of evidence to turn in to the city in two to three months.

Waddel said he got the idea from a similar website in Boston. However, the main difference is Denver’s portal will not include license plate numbers of the vehicles in any of the photos. They will be blurred.

“This is a data collection project right now and hopefully that will get us where we need to get to without shaming folks,” he said.
