17-year-old killed in wrong-way crash was student at DCIS

Michael Ramirez-Muro, 17, was killed in the Saturday crash.

The 17-year-old killed in a three-car crash Saturday night was a student at Denver Center for International Studies, Denver Public Schools confirmed on Monday.

Colorado State Patrol says a black Jeep was traveling south in an Interstate 25 northbound HOV lane near 58th Avenue when it hit a Honda CRV head on just before 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The crash killed Miguel Ramirez Gutierrez, 47, and Michael Ramirez-Muro, 17. Two other women inside the car suffered serious injuries.

Ramirez-Muro was an 11th grade student at DCIS. Principal Theresa McCorquodale issued a statement following the crash:

"The DCIS community lost a beloved student last night. Michael was a source of positive energy in our school. He always had a smile on his face and a contagious positive attitude that brought joy to our students and faculty on a daily basis. Michael’s kindness, friendliness and supportive nature shone through in everything he did. He will be deeply missed by staff and students alike. We extend our most heartfelt sympathy to Michael’s family."

The driver of the Jeep, Kimberly Rodriguez Roldan, 24, also suffered serious injuries. Troopers say she faces possible charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

A third vehicle was struck on the rear of its driver's side by the CRV, causing it to rotate out of control. That driver was uninjured.
