The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office says investigators now believe the deaths of two men at the site of an illegal marijuana grow Thursday evening stemmed from a home invasion that turned into a deadly gunfight.
In a news release Friday morning, the sheriff’s office identified the two men who died as 30-year-old Luis Suarez and 48-year-old Donn Zorens.
Zorens was the man who owns the home in the 30000 block of Highway 24 where the illegal pot grow was occurring, according to the news release.

Suarez’s body was found by deputies just outside the home Thursday night. He had been shot in the torso, the sheriff’s office said.
Zorens’ body was found inside and he had been shot at least once.
The preliminary investigation reveals that Suarez “forced his way” into the 31-acre property just before the two men exchanged fire. The sheriff’s office says he has known ties to organized drug crime in Elbert and El Paso counties.
Exactly what happened remains under investigation.
