A U.S. citizen who fled the country this time last year into Central America was caught Tuesday afternoon after a police chase through Broomfield, authorities say.
Steven Marusich., 28, was convicted in November 2016 on two counts of sexual conduct with a minor in Maricopa County, Arizona, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. A native of Phoenix, Marusich - then out on $250,000 bond - fled the state when he was convicted, U.S. marshals say.
The Phoenix Police Department asked the marshals service for help, who initiated an intense manhunt, law enforcement says, working with information that he may have fled south of the border.
After months of searching, marshals recently learned that Marusich may have returned to the country in September and could be living in Colorado, the U.S. Marshals Service says.
According to a news release, Marusich was spotted Tuesday morning driving a silver Mini Cooper in Broomfield after U.S. Marshals and officers with the Broomfield Police Department set up a surveillance operation in the area of 136th Avenue and Lowell.
After a brief chase, officers and marshals arrested Marusich around 2 p.m., police say.
Marusich is in Broomfield Jail waiting for extradition to Arizona, according to the marshals service.
