The suspicious backpack found in front of the Nederland Police Department on Tuesday morning was a legitimate explosive device, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
The Boulder County Bomb Squad safely detonated the explosive device about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, hours after a Nederland police officer found the backpack in front of the police station and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office substation.
The sheriff's office reopened Thursday morning after performing an area vehicle sweep.
“It’s still a beautiful, safe mountain town,” said Jeff Green, owner of Very Nice Brewing Company. “We just had a really weird incident happen.”

Green’s brewery is just a few doors down from the police station and was one of several businesses forced to close its doors Tuesday. In fact, the discovery of the suspicious backpack prompted the closure of the entire Caribou Ridge Shopping Plaza and several streets.
“It was definitely a big scene,” Green said, who was on his way into work Tuesday when he saw the police presence.
“I actually saw the [bomb squad] robot tooling around in the parking lot as I drove by because I couldn’t get in,” Green said.
Bomb technicians from the FBI also responded to the scene. The FBI said in a release Wednesday that a preliminary investigation showed the IED “was active, but failed to detonate.”
“There was so much disbelief until we got actual confirmation that it was an explosive device,” Jeff Green said.
Businesses, including Very Nice Brewing Company, reopened Wednesday. Authorities did not say if they had identified any suspects.
“We’ve been through floods, we’ve been through fires, [but] an intentional person wanting to do us harm was pretty messed up,” Green said.
The FBI and Boulder County Sheriff's Office have opened a Nederland Bomb Tip Line for anyone with information about the incident: 303-441-3677.
