A man was arrested in connection to a stabbing in a church in Denver that killed a man Thursday evening.

The stabbing took place inside the New Genesis shelter inside the Central Presbyterian church on the 1600 block of Sherman Street.

Police took Timmy Lovelace, 34, into custody moments after arriving at the scene. The man who was attacked died less than an hour later.

Lovelace is being held on investigation of first-degree murder. His first court appearance is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 in Denver County Court at 10 a.m.

Lovelace has a prior criminal history, with eight criminal cases listed for him in North Carolina since 2000. The offenses, however, are all listed as “not specified” and the dispositions are listed as “disposed.”

The church is known for working with the homeless and is just a few blocks from the state capitol. It send out an email to its community that included the following.

"We are very sorry to share news of an incident that occurred inside of New Genesis on Thursday evening resulting in the death of one of its clients (...) this is the first such incident ever to occur at New Genesis. Every reasonable precaution is taken to ensure the safety of all New Genesis clients and staff."
