A man who police say pointed a flare gun at a man in a Longmont store then at officers is now in custody.

Officers responded to a report of a man, later identified as Scott Benson, inside the store pointing a flare gun at another man at about 7:30 p.m.

When police arrived, the 50-year-old was in his vehicle in the parking lot and was uncooperative. Benson, police say, then took out the flare gun, appeared to load it then pointed it at officers.

Officers took cover and eventually used a less lethal shotgun round to break out a window of the vehicle.

After several more commands, Benson got out of the vehicle with a backpack. Officers fired a less lethal shotgun round that struck him in his inner thigh.

Benson gave up a short time later and was taken into custody.

He was taken to Longmont United Hospital for medical clearance. Once cleared, he was taken to the Boulder County Jail.
