A man has been arrested after a standoff with Lakewood police that lasted for several hours Saturday morning.
Officers say they were in the parking lot of the Crossland Economy Suites on Kipling St, near 6th Ave, at around 7 a.m. Saturday on a previous incident when they saw a stolen vehicle that was making its way into the parking lot.
As the car parked, officers pulled two patrol cars in behind it, according to a release. As the officers tried to contact the driver, he backed up and rammed into one of the patrol cars. He then drove forward and ran into the hotel. Unable to drive any further, he got out and ran off.
He ended up hiding in a crawlspace in the back yard of a nearby home near Kipling St and W 8th Ave. The only person in the house at the time got out safely.
Officers secured the area and began negotiations with the suspect to get him to come out of the house, with help from a SWAT team. The suspect came out of the crawlspace at around 12:40 p.m. and was taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Cameron Basquez. He was arrested for Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, 1st Degree Criminal Trespass-Residence, and Disobeying a Lawful Order.
