A standoff, that started in Westminster Tuesday evening, involving a man with several warrants for his arrest ended with a shootout that left the suspect dead and a police officer and K-9 injured.
According to Westminster Police, just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers tried to make contact with a man near West 135th Drive and Kalamath Street. The man was associated with a stolen vehicle and had multiple warrants.
Police say the man ran inside of a home. Other people inside came out, but the man ignored commands to leave the house after being told he was under arrest, police say. Officers were given information that the man had a gun and neighboring residents were told to evacuate or shelter-in-place.
Police say the suspect also ignored attempts by Westminster Police Department SWAT. At some point, officers entered the home, and gunshots were exchanged.
In an update given around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said one officer was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is at home recovering from his injuries. A K-9 -- identified as Diesel the five-year-old Belgian malinois -- was also cut, possibly by glass, and taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment. He is also at home recovering.
Police say the suspect was shot by police and died at the scene.
Four officers have been placed on administrative leave. The 17th Judicial Critical Incident Team will lead the investigation.
Because of the investigation, 135th Drive is closed between Kalamath Street and Navajo Street.
