Police have identified the man shot by an Aurora police officer over the weekend.

On Saturday, officers were conducting surveillance on Michael Torres who was wanted on a felony warrant out Denver for aggravated motor vehicle theft.

They attempted to arrest him after he was spotted inside a car on North Sable Boulevard.

Investigators say he fled from officers and ended up in a ditch nearby. At some point, an officer fired his weapon, hitting Torres, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition. It’s unclear if he was armed, or what prompted the officer to fire his or her weapon.

They have not said if Torres had a weapon when he was hot. Police say a juvenile female was in the car with the suspect. She hasn't hurt.

Chief Nick Metz with the Aurora Police Department discourages shooting at moving vehicles, but says every case is different.

Torres is still in the hospital being treated for his injuries.

The officer involved is a 13-year veteran of the force and is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a shooting.
