The man accused of menacing people with a sword-like weapon on the CU-campus was a 28-year-old Thornton man, according to the Boulder County Coroner.

Two police officers shot and killed Brandon Simmons on Wednesday morning after a confrontation in a stairwell in the Champions Center on the northeast corner of Folsom Field.

According to a source close to the investigation, a woman was sitting in her car when Simmons walked up and scrawled references to the Ten Commandments on one of the vehicle’s windows.

He then entered the Champions Center and threatened people with the sword-like weapon. One person he confronted was able to turn and run without being injured.

During a search of the building, police found Simmons in the stairwell. According to police officials, officers opened fire after he ignored commands to drop the weapon.

9NEWS previously reported Simmons was a recently discharged Marine.

Investigators were trying to determine Wednesday evening whether the man was a student or had any other affiliation with the campus.

No one else was injured in the incident.
