We’ve shared enough medical bill horror stories with you that you’re probably wondering how you can avoid that.

To answer that question, we turned to Adam Fox, from the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative.

His tips were:

  • Know your own insurance plan. It’s an important first step.
  • Make sure the hospital you’re going to AND its provider team are in your insurance network. Fox said more and more they’re seeing the hospital is in the insurance network, but not the specific doctor.
  • It’s always good for you to ask for that information. But beware, it’s not 100 percent certain the hospital can provide you with that.

“Ask questions,” Chris Vanderveen said. “Feel empowered to ask those questions.”

Fox also took the time to do a Facebook Live with us. Watch it below.
