As the deadline gets closer, assisted living residents don't have a place to go

Sitting in her wheelchair, outside in the cold, Evie Vigil told 9NEWS she's been calling around for a new place to live but no one has an opening for her. "Most places I've called said [there's a wait of] 2 years to 6 years," she said. "What am I going to do for 2 years? Live under a bridge?"
It's been a week since Evie Vigil learned she had to find a new home. Hers, Golden Manor assisted living, is closing in April.

It's been a week since Evie Vigil learned she had to find a new home. Her current one, Golden Manor assisted living, is closing in April.

Sitting in her wheelchair outside in the cold, she told 9NEWS she's been calling around but no one has an opening for her to move in.

"Most places I've called said [there's a wait of] 2 years to 6 years," she said, "what am I going to do for 2 years? Live under a bridge?"

Just minutes before our conversation outside, Evie was inside Golden Manor, looking for answers.

Residents, staff, case managers and a developer all met to figure out where everyone was going to go. This was their first get together since the closing announcement.

Of the 68 residents, the administrator of Golden Manor says only 12 have found a place to go. As the deadline approaches, folks are worried about Medicaid transfers, pet friendliness, resources for people with disabilities and those mentally ill.

Leaders in the room didn't have many answers to any of that. Shannon Gimbel is the Ombudsman Program Manager for Denver. She advocates for residents.

"I wish I had a list that said, 'in the past when this happened we did this and this' but it doesn't exist," she said.

Even after the meeting, Vigil doesn't have any answers to her questions or a new place she can call home.
