Condo inside 1800s church for sale in Uptown Denver

Want to live inside a church? There's a condo for that!

It used to be called the California Street Church, although it went by many names over the years.

Built in 1889 at 22nd Avenue and Ogden, it held a vibrant congregation until realtor David Wheaton said people started moving out of the San Rafael Neighborhood to the suburbs.

“The congregation just could not come up with the financial means to support the infrastructure that it requires,” Wheaton told 9NEWS.

The church sat empty until the mid-1990s. It was deconsecrated, and transformed into a building that now holds 12 condo units.

“It’s nice to see an old structure that’s repurposed and given life again,” Wheaton said. “We’ve seen a lot of older structures just completely torn down, and either slot homes or larger condos or apartments being put in place.”

Reminders of the past were purposefully kept in every unit. The one on the market now has an old fireplace, church banisters, and a wall of exposed brick. Other units have stained glass and even confessionals.

“Every time you walk into your house,” Wheaton said, “you have this feeling of grandeur because you’re part of the history of this town.”

The loft-style, one-bedroom, two-bathroom condo is on the market listed at $550,000. Wheaton said as of Friday, someone has made an offer, but they’re still accepting back-up offers.
