Denver Zoo officials announced Wednesday that they will begin a national search for a permanent CEO as interim leader Denny O’Malley’s tenure nears its end.

The city’s most-visited cultural attraction had its best year ever in 2017, attracting 2.24 million visitors to see a range of new permanent and temporary exhibits. But it did so with a permanent CEO for only half of the year, as three-year president/CEO Shannon Block parted ways with the zoo in June. Neither neither Block nor zoo leaders have publicly said what led to the shakeup.

The zoo has retained national recruiting firm Isaacson, Miller to assist with the CEO search, hoping to receive all applications for the position by May 4. O’Malley’s appointed year of transitional leadership ends in June.

“Our next president and CEO will be instrumental in the zoo’s continued success as we strive to uphold our position as a world-class cultural and conservation organization,” said Sherri Koelbel, Denver Zoological Foundation chairwoman. “We look forward to finding an inspirational, mission-driven leader who will provide vision and guidance, and serve as a strong representative for the zoo and wildlife conservation for many years to come.”
