Fort Collins Police Chief John Hutto has resigned.

In recent months, his department has been embroiled in multiple high-profile cases. Most recently, top brass, including Hutto, were the subject of an internal racial and ethnic discrimination lawsuit that resulted in a $425,000 settlement. That's in addition to an excessive force settlement reached out of court earlier this year and controversy about an arrest from Old Town Fort Collins earlier this month.

“It has been my privilege to serve the citizens of Fort Collins as your Chief of Police. Fort Collins Police Services has a proud tradition of excellent service and commitment, and together we have accomplished much," Hutto said in a statement Tuesday morning. "FCPS has faced some significant challenges over the past year and a half, and I believe the organization will benefit from new ideas and a fresh perspective ..."

His resignation is effective May 12. The city is undertaking efforts to find someone from outside the agency to serve as the interim chief while a nationwide search is conducted.
