We spend a lot of time on this site talking about negotiating a higher starting salary. But what about a raise?
It’s an important part of the pay equation — particularly if you’re happy with your current gig. The bad news? It’s probably going to be a harder sell, if you want more than the standard 2 to 3 percent increase.
“It absolutely is easier to get a larger starting salary, because it’s expected. It’s just part of the process. After a week, it’s over and done with and you all know this is kind of the rules of engagement,” said Katie Donovan, founder of Boston-based Equal Pay Negotiations LLC. “A raise can happen any time. They’re not as playbook-oriented. So in that sense, it’s harder. But it doesn’t mean it’s not doable.”What situations are good ones to negotiate a raise?
