Woman set to be first transgender person to hold state office in Colorado talks representation

Only five votes separated Democrat Brianna Titone and Republican Vicki Pyne at one point earlier this week, but the difference grew to nearly 400 as more ballots were counted.

A woman aiming to become the first transgender person to hold state office in Colorado is declaring victory.

Democrat Brianna Titone leads Republican Vicki Pyne by nearly 400 votes in the race to represent House District 27, which covers parts of Arvada and northern Jefferson County that are traditionally conservative.

Titone says Pyne called her Saturday night to concede the race. Only five votes separated the two at one point earlier this week, but the difference grew as more ballots were counted.

Titone says folks in the transgender community feel underrepresented and there needs to be more people like herself in leadership roles.

While Titone says she's proud to be that voice, she told 9NEWS on Monday she's also glad voters decided she's the right person for the job.

"it doesn't matter who you are, it's what you stand for, what you believe in, values and qualifications, and how hard you work is that's really going to dictate if you get elected," Titone said.

Titone says she will focus on education funding and environmental issues.
