DIA goes dark for Earth Hour

DIA turns off iconic "Mustang" during Earth Hour to promote global warming awareness.
The iconic blue mustang was turned off for Earth Hour at DIA March 28.

KUSA - In an effort to reduce the world's carbon footprint, Denver International Airport went dark Saturday night by dimming its lights.

This is the second year DIA has participated in Earth Hour.

The airport first turned off the LED sign along the eastbound lanes of Pena Boulevard at 7:30 p.m.

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., DIA turned off the lights to the iconic red-eyed blue Mustang that welcomes travelers at Jeppesen Terminal.

"Earth Hour is an international day of education and a call to action with regard to our responsibility and the impact of our actions on our planet," said Denver's Manager of Aviation Kim Day.

Days says the new water bottle filling stations they installed last year -- to encourage travelers to use plastic bottles -- have filled the equivalent of 600,000 half-liter plastic bottles.

The airport also utilizes natural-day lighting to reduce emissions.

"We take climate change seriously and are working hard to make a difference," Day said.

Earth Hour did not affect operations at the airport, and were turned back on at the end of the hour.
