City of Denver evicts 'Grandma' from brewery

Our favorite inflatable grandma is feeling pretty deflated these days - in every sense of the word.

DENVER — A grandma living in Denver has been evicted from her home.

If we all remember, the last time the wind was blowing like a mother back in March, Next shared a video of said grandmother flapping in the breeze. And to clarify, the grandmother was a giant inflatable grandma balloon (kind of parade-float like) atop Grandma’s House Brewery on South Broadway, in Denver.

PREVIOUS STORY: It was so windy grandma almost blew away

Next reached out to the brewery to see how Grandma did on Tuesday, when winds were blowing 60-90 mph in Colorado. Owner Matthew Fuerst told us, however, that grandma was just fine during the wind storm, because she wasn’t outside when it happened.

The original video got a lot of laughs, and a lot of attention – so much so that someone called 311 to report Grandma. We're not sure who.

“Unfortunately, the City of Denver caught wind (pun intended) of Grandma from all the attention she received [last month], and apparently there is a section of the city code that prohibits permanent displays of inflatables,” Fuerst told us, adding he could be cited for leaving Grandma on the roof.

We checked with the city, and he is correct. Three days after Grandma's TV debut, an inspector told the brewery to boot Grandma from the roof because Denver code 10.10.3.2.I, which says:

"Inflatables, balloons and / or streamers / pennants shall allowed as a promotion of a special event only. The zoning administrator shall issue a summons and complaint for inflatables, balloons, streamers or pennants emplaned without a permit and shall not issue a permit for the next event in said location."

Grandma is actually known as Franca, named after Fuerst’s own grandmother. Franca’s currently hanging out in the brewery – feeling deflated and empty inside until further notice.
