Girl Scouts want to change the law in Aurora

Five girl scouts want the Aurora City Council to pass a law making it illegal to smoke in cars with minors. Monday night, their case passed its first test.

The proposal was unanimously approved in its first vote in Aurora. There is still one more vote before that committee before the ban becomes official.

Their proposal got a few tweaks from the council; just like the seat belt law, it will be a secondary violation. meaning drivers will have to be pulled over for speeding or something else first. And instead of a fine, a judge could sentence the smoker to community service instead

Those scouts thought of this idea while trying to earn the Silver Award, one of the highest recognitions in Girl Scouts.

The final vote will take place next month.
