Passerby kicks open door, rescues dog from home during garage fire

The man, who was on his way to work, said he was "just doing the right thing." Firefighters have since put out the blaze.

A passerby and a neighbor helped rescue two dogs from a Brighton home after the garage caught on fire, causing several small explosions on Tuesday.

"As I was driving, I just noticed it was a black cloud of smoke go up, and I just pulled in out of curiosity," said Johnny Romero, who was on his way to work. "When I pulled up, I noticed that the garage was on fire."

Romero said he and the neighbor spoke with the homeowner through the video doorbell system and the homeowner said to go in to get the dogs, and that's when they decided to kick in the door open.

"So, we go in the house, find the two dogs and pull them out," he said.

One dog was in the basement and the other was upstairs, he said.

Romero said they then went across the street. The fire burning in the garage then caused small explosions.

"Everything started exploding," he said.

No one was injured in the fire. The home, which is still intact, is near the intersection of East 160th Avenue and Havana Street. Firefighters have since put out the blaze.

Brighton Fire Chief Mark Bodane said when firefighters arrived on scene there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage and that they moved inside the house to prevent the fire from spreading to the home.

"Within the garage and other spaces, you can have flammable liquids that may explode," Bodane said.

The department said in a tweet they have not officially determined the cause of the blaze.

Bodane added that the fire department appreciated that Romero called 911.

"Certainly, we want people to be careful in those situations because we don’t want to add a victim when there wasn’t a victim, but we certainly appreciate his quick thinking," Bodane said.

Romero said the owners "were just happy to see the dogs."

"I wouldn’t call myself a hero," he said. "I’m not a hero, just doing the right thing."

The Colorado & Wyoming Red Cross tweeted that it provided lodging to "a family of 6 in Brighton this afternoon as they have been displaced by a fire in their home."
