Plume of smoke visible for miles due to fire near 71st and Federal

Federal Boulevard is closed in both directions at 70th Avenue while crews fight the blaze. About 60 firefighters from multiple fire agencies have been called in to help.

WESTMINSTER — A plume of smoke was visible for miles due to a large commercial structure fire near 71st Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Westminster.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon in an unoccupied RV sales lot and repair shop, according to a tweet from the Westminster Fire Department. There were two small flare-ups since Thursday evening, the Westminster Fire Department said on Twitter Friday afternoon. Both were minor, the agency said.

They're still working to determine the cause and said the integrity of the structure is in question.

Viewer video from the scene showed active flames and thick, black smoke billowing into the air.

About 60 firefighters from multiple fire agencies including Denver, Arvada, Westminster, Adams County and Federal Heights were called in to help. The fire was declared under control around 4:20 p.m., but it'll likely be several hours before the fire is fully extinguished, firefighters said.

At this point, no injuries have been reported.
