The sponsor of a bill that could have made it nearly impossible to conduct background checks on job and loan applicants killed his proposal Wednesday, saying he will need time and likely a future legislative session to iron out the bill's language.
Colorado House Bill 1063, sponsored by state Rep. Dave Williams, R-Colorado Springs, would have required consumers to give consent to credit agencies to pass their consumer reports onto third parties, and it would have allowed them to erase their credit records if the information was the subject of a data breach.
Williams’ effort is part of a push by both parties this year in the Legislature to increase protection of consumer data after last year’s Equifax Inc. (NYSE: EFX) hack exposed the financial records of more than 145 million Americans.
While other bills aim to ramp up businesses’ disclosure requirements after breaches and seek to shield minors from record hacks, he wanted to give consumers more say over their data.
