Eight days after ballots were dropped into the mail, 286,639 Coloradans already have voted, Secretary of State Wayne Williams said Tuesday.

And so far, Democrats are leading Republicans in the early-voting tallies, 117,766 to 94,499, with another 70,410 votes cast by unaffiliated voters.

Tuesday's total is more than double Monday's tally of 113,932 ballots returned out of roughly 2.8 million mailed out to the state's resgistered voters.

The figures include ballots returned by mail or at a drop-off location as well as votes cast in person at early-voting centers.
