Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to decide today whether to appeal a case to the Colorado Supreme Court -- a decision that could have far-reaching consequences for the state’s oil and gas industry and other sectors.

Today is the deadline for an appeal of a Colorado Court of Appeals ruling in a case that started in 2013.

The question at issue in the case is whether the state should continue to seek a balance between oil and gas development and protecting public health and the environment — or if protection must be assured ahead of development.

And the question has taken on significant overtones in the wake of the fatal April 17 Firestone home explosion that killed two men and has been traced to natural gas accidentally flowing from an old well drilled in 1993 -- a well drilled more than two decades before the home was built 178 feet away in 2015.
