Security changes coming to the Buell Theatre February 13

Starting next week, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts is adding security to the Buell Theatre entrances.

The changes coming to the Buell Theater sound a little more like going to the airport instead of a night at the show to Devan Kingsford, a poet who sits outside the performing arts complex often.

"I balk at the idea of the DCPA becoming the TSA," he said. "I don't know a lot of people trying to fit their pistols in at the ballet either."

Beginning Tuesday, every entrance at Buell will have a metal detector. Bags must be smaller than 12" by 12" and Denver Arts and Venues is recommending patrons arrive an hour before the show.

"Nothing specific prompted this," said Brian Kitts with Denver Arts and Venues. "You'll see this at a number of venues nationally as a part of ongoing security upgrades."

Kitts says these changes will bring Buell more in line with the security process at local venues like the Pepsi Center and Coors Field.

Kingsford is not so sure how he feels about the changes. We asked him to write a poem about them, which you can read below.
